Considering the Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated devices transferring massive quantities of data without human-to-human interaction, and most IoT devices currently on the market aren’t capable of connecting to Salesforce with out-of-the-box features, we developed the Salesforce IoT Connected Device Solution to help Salesforce customers capture their IoT data in Salesforce. 

NEED: INTERNET-OF-THINGS CONNECTED DEVICE SOLUTION

The goal of the Salesforce IoT Connector is to help empower every business in the connected device space to be able to harness the data from their connected devices and use it to reimagine how they interact with their customers.

We noticed to help accelerate adoption of Salesforce within the IoT community, Salesforce admins needed to be able to connect all the devices already in the field. The large amounts of data gathered had to be handled in a way that would allow administrators to manage it in an efficient manner.

SOLUTION

We developed an app that establishes a link between the client’s IoT device management platform, like AWS or Google Cloud Platform, and their Salesforce dashboard to import all IoT data, in real-time. We built the app using Apex from the Salesforce side and JavaScript from the AWS side, along with Lightning Web Components. 

The app makes the process of linking the management service to Salesforce both simple and intuitive. It acts as a data replicator that connects to the management platform, collects the data that has been gathered in the field and sends it to Salesforce.

Salesforce administrators are probably concerned with how we handle the data ported into Salesforce from their IoT management service. The Salesforce IoT Connector provides all the power they need to easily manage what is coming in and where it goes once it gets there. To ensure this, the admin is able to provide an example of the data coming in from their management service (in JSON format) and map all data types to Salesforce event fields of their choosing.

RESULTS

Data collected through the use of internet-connected devices can be paired with Salesforce data to create a powerful tool for customer interaction that is not only reactive to customer needs but also proactive. Based on the data sent to Salesforce on a constant basis from IoT devices and the use of Salesforce IoT orchestrations, Salesforce customers can predict the needs of their customers and create a truly personalized experience.

With the Salesforce IoT Connected Device Solution, we have succeeded in further lowering the barrier of entry for Salesforce customers to take advantage of all data collected by their internet-connected devices. We’re always imagining new ways to use IoT technology to transform customer experiences and we believe this tool is one of the essential first steps on that road.
